Measured Uniquely

How many times do we compare ourselves to others? Probably a lot more than we’d like to admit. For some reason, we believe we need to “one-up” each other to make ourselves look better than the next. It’s like we cannot be enough if our neighbor is winning.

It’s a Biblical problem that goes all the way back to Cain & Abel. In Genesis 4, we meet the two sons of Adam & Eve – Cain & Abel. One was a farmer and the other was a shepherd. The farmer (Cain) offered God a sacrifice of vegetation and the shepherd (Abel) offered God a sacrifice of meat. God only accepted Abel’s offering and Cain got so jealous that he killed his own brother. Cain was forever banished to wander the Earth.

Do you see how destructive comparison can be? Do you know that this isn’t God’s desire for us? Do you understand that God created each of us uniquely for a reason and purpose – to walk along side each other rather than against each other? (Isaiah 64:8, Ephesians 2:10, Ephesians 4:16)

Lisa Bevere says in her book Without Rival that God doesn’t love us equally, but uniquely. We are all made so intricately God cannot love us all in the same way, but His love for us is tailored to who He made us. (See Psalm 139:13-16)

Our focus should be running in comparison to Jesus. He is the one we should compare ourselves with & only Him. Jesus came to Earth not only to die for our sins, but to be our example. Set your gaze on His journey & not on your neighbors as comparison.

When we look over to our neighbors- we should be doing it to encourage, help or show love to them. When we care about each other & understand that we are meant to work with each other than against each other, the Body of Christ can thrive.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.”

It’s time to move (on)

Have you ever done something stupid? Or hurt someone real bad? Or did something even worse…

We have all been there in some way. Each of us know what it’s like to feel guilt and shame. It’s part of this life. But this is also where we sometimes get caught up.

We even repent, ask God to forgive, make amends with others – and think we have fully moved on, but in the back of your mind, that thing is still there. It pops up in those late night thoughts and those lonely moments – making you feel hopeless.

Listen to me, friend, if it’s forgiven, move on. Stop beating yourself up. It’s time to forgive yourself and lay that guilt down.

If you haven’t repented or asked someone to forgive you, do it and don’t let it bother you any more. This life is far too fragile to allow yourself to be overridden with worry, regret, and shame.

Apologize to God and others (if needed) and keep going. Acknowledge that you cannot go back and change what happened in your past, but you can make sure it doesn’t happen in your future.

Remember that in Christ, you are a new creation. Tomorrow is a new day with new adventures. Hold your head up, shoulders back and show the Enemy he didn’t win!

Prayer: Lord, you know that thing or things that hold me up & I cannot allow myself to forgive myself – help me let it go. If I have never asked you for repentance, please forgive me and help me do better in the future. Thank you for your Son Jesus and His sacrifice so I may ask for forgiveness and move on. You are so good! Amen.

Unity

Unity – the state of not being multiple. That is what Christ wants for His church. If you consider yourself a Christ-follower, He is speaking about you & I. It is no secret that, in America, unity is not where we are in our country. So many of us are waiting for our government to unify us, make this country better. But we can’t depend on them to do that. It must start in the church…with us!
So many things could divide us if we let differences matter. I am very blessed to attend a church that is multiracial, multigenerational, and multi-socioeconomic. We aren’t a perfect church because that doesn’t exist. But the fact that we have many differences and yet we are one family says so much. It shows me that unity within the body of Christ is possible.

We are going to be different. We are going to have Democrats & Republicans, different races, some people wealthy and others that aren’t – and still work for the same goal. The Church should be where unity starts.  

Let’s show love to others regardless of how different someone is to us. Speak truth, yes. Preach the word, yes. Live righteously, yes. But love people like God loves. Seek justice for those who deserve it. Treat all people like they have value…because they do. Everyone is made in God’s image.  

Let’s start being the change we wish to see in the world & living boldly. Who is joining me?

The Gift We Give Ourselves

Forgiveness…a word often used in the Christian faith. We sometimes speak this word in haste, but it is one of the most powerful things that is in this world. Think about this – the Enemy (Satan) has no part of true forgiveness. He, in fact, wants us to keep remembering what they did, he did, we did as we go through life. Jesus died on the Cross so that we don’t have to…

Look at Luke 23:32-43:

Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him. When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice. The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. “He saved others,” they said, “let him save himself if he is really God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” The soldiers mocked him, too, by offering him a drink of sour wine. They called out to him, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” A sign was fastened above him with these words: “This is the King of the Jews.” One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you’re the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you’re at it!” But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Not only did Christ forgive a known criminal that deserved the Cross – reserved for the worst of the worst – and took him to Paradise to live forever (gives me chills!), but also forgave those who were hurting Him as they were hurting Him. Is your mind blown? Because mine is!

Even on the Cross, Jesus was our living example of how we need to live our lives. He was showing us that, even as people are hurting us, we need to forgive them. We need to show compassion on them. We need to let it go! WE NEED TO LOVE THEM. That is hard, huh? Yep. It is. But with God, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).

Have you been hurt? Has someone you once held close betrayed you? Are you in so much pain that you don’t know what to do with yourself? Jesus has a solution: let it go, give it to Him, and forgive those that hurt you. Don’t seek revenge, don’t try to put them in their place, don’t allow bitterness to creep in. God will take care of the consequences on their part. Allow your heart to love them as they are…because one day you will hope that someone gives you that kind of blessing.

Pray this with me: Lord, I am hurting from the actions and words of people around me. I ask you to help me forgive them. I know that this will not be easy for me, but I know that it wasn’t easy for Christ to forgive on the Cross yet He did. I know that, in your strength, I will be able to move on free from any grudges, bitterness, or pain. I ask you to help me forgive and love them just as they are and see them how you see them. Lord, bless them. I thank you for your gift of forgiveness that I do not deserve. Your grace is a precious gift. I love you, Lord. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Forgive 4 U

Forgiveness – this is the best gift you can give yourself this Christmas. So many things can happen, so many people can hurt you, so many things go on for years and years.

I encourage you to take time during this week & next to search your heart and ask God to help you forgive those who may have hurt you. Don’t carry these things over to the next year again! Holding onto things like that is like holding poison in your mouth & refusing to spit it out…it slowly kills you.

Let 2015 be the BEST year you have ever had. Don’t let the past get in the way of your destiny. You are too important and have too much work to do on this earth to allow the things that have happened to you to get in the way of what God has planned for you.

Ponder this scripture:

“You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell. “So if you are presenting a sacrifice at the altar in the Temple and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you, leave your sacrifice there at the altar. Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to God. (‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭21-24‬ NLT)

Go to people, make amends, let Love grow in us all – because our ultimate goal is to all be in Heaven together, worshipping our Lord and Savior for all eternity!
