Persistence

Did you grow up with a weird last name?  I did – and I still have it.  Gaigalas…it’s one of those last names that make people nervous to say.  Ha!  It’s Lithuanian – which I am 1/4th.  Lithuania is a small Eastern European country by Latvia and Poland near the Baltic Sea.  With its beautiful countryside and amazing architecture – it is also a country known for its resilience.

One of the greatest stories of resilience is the Hill of Crosses in the town of Šiauliai.  It began in the mid-1800’s when the Lithuanian people rose up against the Russian Czar’s regime and, as a result, many of their families remains were not able to be buried.  So, instead of a traditional burial, they placed crosses to honor them.  It was a show of defiance against oppression.  Thus began the hill of crosses.  It was a place where the Lithuanian people could pray, reflect, and find hope.

In the 1940s – the country, which had been independent for some years – were overtaken by the Soviet Union.  In a communist regime – any form of religion is forbidden therefore, the Hill of Crosses was a prohibited site.  As a stubborn and persevering people, they were not going to allow the KGB to stop their efforts of building the Hill of Crosses.  Through the course of the 30+ year oppression – there were Soviet soldiers stationed around the hill, the new crosses and figures removed, and the Soviet soldiers bulldozed the hill a few times.  None of this deterred the Lithuanian people from continuing to build this hill.  In 1991 – Lithuania became a free nation – no longer under communistic rule.  At that time, the Hill of Crosses was no longer under threat of destruction and it started to grow (and overflow!).  They estimate that the number of crosses, Christian figurines and other religious relics on the hill is 200,000!

I look at this story and think about how we, as the Body of Christ, must be as resilient as Lithuanians were when we get knocked down or our dreams get “bulldozed”.  The world is becoming a place that is hostile to what Christianity teaches.  I just read that the government of China tore down a Christian Mega Church this week.  ISIS is killing Christians.  Even in America, we are finding it harder to express ourselves without opposition.  The world is becoming a hostile place to worship Jesus freely.

If we want overflow, we must persevere even in this hostile climate.  The Enemy will do everything he can to take us down, make us believe we cannot do something, or that we are not worthy of something.  If we can continue to be persistent and build our own hill of crosses – how great a tribute would that be to Jesus?  Sharing Him with others, speaking truth in love when it is no longer “politically correct”, or even worshiping freely for our international brothers and sisters – how much would that shake the world around us?  How much do you want the overflow?  Are you willing to continue to fight when you are under siege?  God works everything out for our good, y’all.  Keep pushing and don’t let the enemy keep you down.  Our victory is just around the corner!

Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

Galatians 6:9 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

Pressing Reset

Being a Christian does not automatically cause you to stop sinning. Nope…I am a sinner in need of a Savior every day.  Being a Christian also doesn’t keep you from experiencing tough times.  Nope…we go through them like every other human on the Earth.  The difference, though, resides in who we turn to when in those trials.

Here is a major battle I fight often: I feel so inadequate and unworthy at times. I feel very much like I am worthless…like the promises God has placed on my life are not real.  Oh, but those are just lies.  They are lies from the enemy who wants me to cower and not fulfill my life’s purpose; to keep me believing that I am weak and no different than I’ve ever been.

What about you? What are the lies the enemy tells you?  What self-talk do you struggle with?

The greatest way to counter those lies is the word of God. The truth in the Bible is everlasting.  It will not die!

Here are a few truths I consistently remind myself of:

God loves you and me: But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

You and I are made new: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

He knew us before He formed us: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

Through Christ, we are made strong: “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”(2 Corinthians 12:9)

Believers have been given eternal life: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

We have been bought with a high price: “For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” (1 Peter 1:18-19)

Replacing the lies of the enemy – whatever those lies may be – with the word of God will keep your mind on track. Keeping your thoughts on track will help you stay your course and finish the race set before us.  Don’t ever give up!

There are times, though, where I find myself in a place that I am unsure what are lies and what aren’t. It get confusing because life gets busy, I don’t spend time with God like I should, or I’m just stuck in a mindset that is unhealthy…I will have to pray this simple prayer from Psalm 139:23-24:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
Point out anything in me that offends you,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”

I encourage you to start spending time with God every day. Pray the prayer from Psalm 139,  Feed your mind with the word of God so when the enemy lies, you can remind yourself what God says about you.

Be blessed, readers.

Generations

A great leader leads his family first.  My grandfather was that type of man. He was not someone who you would notice in a crowd or ask to lead a company.  No, he was not one to be in the spotlight.  But the thing he understood was the value of those around him.

This year marks 20 years since he has passed.  It is fitting – and no way ironic – that the vision for my church home is Generational Blessings.  My life has been blessed because it was set on a foundation that Milburn Brook Gann built.

It was never the big things that I remember fondly – it was the small things.  For instance, how he planted a yellow rose bush – because I have blond hair – and, every time it bloomed, he’d bring me a rose.  Or just sitting and listening to me talk as a very young child – hanging on every word.  In those seemingly small acts, he taught me my value.

He was a man of character – a man who loved God.  He set the standard for us who came after him.

So, you may be asking why do I decide to write to you about this person?  Is it to brag on him a little?  Partly, yes it is – because he deserves it.  But it is also to outline the responsibility we all play to those around us.  As my church leadership speaks on the importance of setting a great example for the next generation – I cannot think of a better example in my personal life.

To make an impact on the generations around me – I don’t need to be a successful business person or a person of great wealth.  I just need to let those around me know how valuable they are.  This could be in sincerely listening to people when they talk or tiny, yet meaningful acts of kindness or just spending quality time with someone who may need it.  It doesn’t take much to impact the world.  It just takes true effort.

I encourage you to watch your actions and understand the impact they have on others.  If small acts of kindness can make a positive act on someone that lasts a generation – so can small acts of carelessness.

Be blessed, everyone.

Forgive 4 U

Forgiveness – this is the best gift you can give yourself this Christmas. So many things can happen, so many people can hurt you, so many things go on for years and years.

I encourage you to take time during this week & next to search your heart and ask God to help you forgive those who may have hurt you. Don’t carry these things over to the next year again! Holding onto things like that is like holding poison in your mouth & refusing to spit it out…it slowly kills you.

Let 2015 be the BEST year you have ever had. Don’t let the past get in the way of your destiny. You are too important and have too much work to do on this earth to allow the things that have happened to you to get in the way of what God has planned for you.

Ponder this scripture:

“You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell. “So if you are presenting a sacrifice at the altar in the Temple and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you, leave your sacrifice there at the altar. Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to God. (‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭21-24‬ NLT)

Go to people, make amends, let Love grow in us all – because our ultimate goal is to all be in Heaven together, worshipping our Lord and Savior for all eternity!

Be blessed, everyone!
